WORLD BANK CONSULTATIVE GROUP MEETING ON ZAMBIA MAINTAINS HUMAN RIGHTS
Human Rights Watch has welcomed human rights issues that were
prominently featured during the World Bank Consultative Group meeting
discussions on Zambia in Paris (May 12-13). Human rights issues were
identified as top priority. Zambian government was urged to take
decisive action on human rights violations associated with police
interrogations of some of the accused of October 97 attempted coup.
Individuals who took part in torturing detainees should be named by
the Permanent Human Rights Commission and be suspended pending
a full
independent investigation. Human Rights Watch also welcomed
the
Zambian government's willingness in Paris to discuss human
rights
issues.
