PRESS RELEASE
The latest developments in the Robbie/Tshabalala-Msimang debacle do not bode well for freedom of the media in South Africa. The media appears to be under assault from those who own the media as well as the ruling party.
Although it may be understandable that the owners of Radio 702, Primemedia, were embarrassed at Robbie's style and loss of temper in the interview with the Minister, arguing that company policy does not condone or encourage disrespect or rudeness, their actions indicate firstly, a total lack of understanding of the separation which must exist between management and the newsroom, and secondly, a desire to B bow to the demands of the ANC.
The interference in the newsroom by Primedia is even less acceptable as it is even further removed from the newsroom than the immediate management of the station.
We commend the station for supporting John Robbie throughout this period as well as John Robbie himself for remaining steadfast.
