PRESS RELEASE
Press Statement for Immediate release 21 June 2000
The Freedom of Expression Institute would like to welcome the ruling by the Cape High Court to allow cameras and recording equipment into the commission of inquiry into allegations of match-fixing. We take the ruling as a breakthrough in terms of access to information and media freedom, since the commission is addressing matters which are of importance to the public. Justice King had earlier restricted live coverage of radio and television, arguing that their presence during the proceedings would intimidate players and might have a negative effect on their testimonies and consequently on the effectiveness of the commission.
The ruling follows last week's urgent application in which Live Africa Network News sought a temporary permission from the Cape High Court to broadcast proceedings at the commission. In addition, the SA Broadcasting Corporation and e.tv would be allowed to broadcast the hearings but would alternate sessions, and radio would broadcast the proceedings live. This has demistified the whole process as the electronic media are the vehicle through which the majority of the population receive their information. FXI, through its media defence fund, had contributed to the legal costs.
