9-11-2000 : FXI RESPONDS TO RACIST THREATS ON E.TV CREW

The Freedom of Expression Institute is shocked to learn that the producers of e.tv's actuality programme 3rd Degree were ill treated during their visit to what the owner describe as "whites only" picnic resort in Stokkiesdraai in Free State. 3rd Degree presenter Deborah Patta, her husband Meli Mzizi, camera operator Deon Kloppers and Sam Rogers were visiting the resort undercover following a tip off about racism there. According to reports, Mzizi attempted to pay an entrance fee but was told blacks were not allowed. Consequently the owner Hennie Muller was called to remedy the situation because the team insisted that it was illegal in terms of the Constitution to refuse somebody entry as a result of their race.

FXI believes that for Muller to verbally abuse the team, threaten them with violence and even attempt to snatch Roger's camera, is outrageous. Muller's attitude reflects his and certain other white South Africans' disregard for the new dispensation and the bill of rights in which both the rights to equality and media freedom are guaranteed.

FXI is also appalled by the SABC's Special Assignment about six police officers who used three illegal immigrants as bait to train their dogs at a disused mine dump outside Springs. It is obvious that Muller and the six police officers have not rejected the brutality and discrimination of apartheid after six years of democracy.

The media has played an important part in exposing these horrific activities and needs to be commended. Their actions serve to illustrate how crucial media freedom is in advancing democracy in our country.
