Projects and Campaigns

THE ANTI-CENSORSHIP LEGISLATION PROJECT

This project was initiated in September 2002 and it examined a number of laws still existing or being introduced in South African statute books that violate the right to freedom of expression. Such laws include the National Key Points Acts (1980), the Protection of Information Act (1982) and the Interception and Monitoring Acts (2002).

CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE ANTI-TERRORISM BILL

This campaign was kickstarted with the financial assistance of the Foundation for Human Rights in South Africa with the aim of creating awareness around the dangers posed by the Anti-Terrorism Bill. It involved the hosting of education and training workshops, media interviews, writing press articles and submissions to the Portfolio Committee on Safety and Security. The campaign was able to create a general momentum of opposition to the Bill which quickly took on a life of its own.
